This was our first year attending the competition which consisted of on-site competitions like yearbook spread design, newspaper story-writing, and broadcast script-writing, as well as carry-in competitions for photography and video.  We are very excited to announce that six OJRHS students will now advance to the state-level competition on March 4th in State College!

700 Colorful Runners, HUGE Success

The Best Buddies/Education Foundation color run drew 592 registered runners in the 5K alone!!!! An estimated 100 more ran or walked the 1 mile fun run—a total of nearly 700 runners!

The event committee is grateful to coaches, parents and volunteers who helped to create a love and understanding of running in our youth these past weeks! We have heard from several parents who are pleased that students gained skills and reduced fears associated with running. Many are already planning subsequent running events together.

Every single runner was valued for participation. The committee learned a valuable lesson about leaving registration open too long, however, as 150 people registered in the final week. In addition, another 200 walked up and registered on RACE DAY! Although the organizers were not prepared for numbers such as those, almost every registrant handled the situation with grace!

Last year's 5K event saw 120 runners, the year before that about 75.  Some in the running community are saying the event may have been the largest running event ever in the Pottstown area! Go Wildcats!

Despite the hitches (shortage of t-shirts, long registration lines, etc), there were mostly positive experiences. Families had fun together. Students were exposed to positive role models who practice healthy habits. There was cheering and support all along the course. Best of all, the proceeds will all funnel back into our schools to impact OJR students!!!! What a win-win!

Solemn Gratitude

Owen J. Roberts schools honored veterans this week (and always).

Owen J. Roberts High School hosted the 10th annual ceremony and luncheon celebrating veterans on November 11, 2015.

The audience was challenged by more than one speaker to think about living out our debt to service men and women through our own actions.

Master Gunnery Sergeant Andrew Worley, Head of Naval Junior ROTC, shared the following quote by John F. Kennedy, "As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."

Senior Sarah, Hume, Owen J. Roberts High School Senior Class Director also shared that sentiment. Her thoughts indicated that it can be selfish to simply thank veterans for our freedoms and all we enjoy in this country. Her idea is that the real way to appreciate the service of veterans is to act upon our gratitude by serving this nation in some way.

Mr. David Schwenk, High School Social Studies, organized the event. Veterans were honored by the High School Choir, Dr. Michael Christian, Dr. Richard Marchini, the NJROTC Drill Team/Drum & Bugle Corps, Tino Chigumira, Sarah Hume, Pensylvania State Senator John Rafferty, a represetative for Senator Toomey, Pennsylvania State Representative Tim Hennessy, Master Gunnery Sergeant Andrew Worley, Cadet/Lt. Commander Sara Maute and Mrs. Shelia McIntyre.

To the Owen J. Roberts Administration, Teachers, Staff, Parents, PTA’s, Students, and Bus Lot:

The Coventry Food Pantry would like to thank you for your continued support.   We appreciate your generosity and willingness to share with those less fortunate.  Your donations help us to provide food and personal supplies to members of our community that are in need on a monthly basis.

As you know The Coventry Food Pantry is a 501c organization.  We are run by volunteers and have been serving the Owen J. Roberts community from the basement of the North Coventry Township building for 43 years.  As a provider of The Emergency Food Assistance Program and the State Food Purchase Program for Northern Chester County we are assisting an average of 85 families a month that are considered food insecure.  In 2013 we began the weekend backpack program in your school district to provide food for students identified as going hungry over the weekend by school officials.  This program is currently running in all the OJR Elementary schools as well as the middle and high school.  We have 55 students enrolled so for the 2015 – 2016 school year.

We would like to extend a special thank you to Kira Rumpp for organizing the “Make a Difference Day” collection, Cindy for driving the bus, and the high school wrestling team for the man power to unload all those boxes of food.  The OJR school district does so much to help us throughout the year:   Special food and paper goods collections by classrooms and grades, PTA support through volunteers and collections for the backpack program, Clubs volunteering to pack food, and growing fresh produce in your school gardens.  We could not do it without you!

We send you our deepest appreciation for helping us with our mission:

To create a hunger-free community throughout Northern Chester County by distributing food and basic household supplies to individuals and families in need.

Sincerely,
Board and Committee Members,
Ginny, Carol, Millie, Kathe, Rick, Brian, and Gloria

The Fall Play Cast and Crew cordially invite you to attend
Mary Chase's HARVEY!

Tickets:  $5.00 and available from cast member or at the door

When Elwood P. Dowd (played by Christian Eagen) starts to introduce his imaginary friend, Harvey, a six-and-a-half-foot rabbit, to guests at a society party, his sister, Veta (played by Natalie Bartlett), has seen as much of his eccentric behavior as she can tolerate.  She decides to have him committed to a sanitarium to spare her daughter, Myrtle Mae (played by Olivia Foden), and their family from future embarrassment.  Problems arise, however, when Veta herself is mistakenly assumed to be on the verge of lunacy when she explains to doctors and the nurse (played by Manus Weber, Zach Moyer, and Reagan Flewelling) that years of living with Elwood's hallucination have caused her to see Harvey also!  The doctors commit Veta instead of Elwood, but when the truth comes out, the search for Elwood and his invisible companion is on with the help of Wilson (played by Tino Chigumira).  When he shows up at the sanitarium looking for his lost friend Harvey, it seems that the mild-mannered Elwood's delusion has had a strange influence on more than one of the doctors.  Only at the end does Veta realize that maybe Harvey isn't so bad after all.

Additional roles are portrayed by Darcy Harris, Lani Boyle, Carly Arthurs, Michael Lipkowitz, and Ryan Davis.  This year's Intermission Scene, written by OJR graduate Megan Bealer, will be performed by Christine Hoffman, Kaiden Roberts, Wyeth Cosperite, Victoria Rivkin, Cassady Myerson, Paige Cadieux-Petrie, Cassidy Niggeman, Michael Maher, Scott Tevis, Tierney Campbell, Tobius Ford, Nick Barone, Courtlynn Bliss, Amyln Savarese, Julia Amadio, Lily Buettler, Kaitlyn Seraphin, and Charlotte Lasak.

Narrators for the evening are Angeline Viti, Katie Sundermaier, Max Gallagher, Arielle Shakour, Kat Bobo, and Lucas Gray.

The show is directed by seniors Katie Hudick and Andrew Martin and junior Maya Greenholt.  Faculty Director is Mrs. Dawn Galambos.

Please join us for an evening of outstanding comedy!

Historical Fiction Author Visits MS

Some middle school English Language Arts students had the pleasure today of meeting with a published author.  Scott Armstrong, the father of eighth grader Nathaniel Armstrong, is the author of Russian Snows: Coming of Age in Napoleon's Army, an historical fiction account of Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812.  Mr. Armstrong shared with the students his love of history growing up in a family of historical re-enactors and how his life experiences helped shape his writing.  He was inspired to write the story by his daughter, Helen, who is also a creative writer.  He took on the challenge of writing the entire novel in one month during the annual National Novel Writing Month (NANOWRIMO.ORG).

Students learned about the facts surrounding the history of the novel Russian Snows. They also learned that in order to shape characters, Mr. Armstrong studied personal accounts from Napoleon's troops and eyewitnesses from the period.

Mr. Armstrong shared some important writing tips with the students. He imposed upon them the importance of editing. He told them to never be afraid of feedback they can use to improve their own writing, and encouraged them to give him feedback on his own book as he works on the sequel.  His talk was organized by Literature Links Teacher Laura Frank.  Also attending the presentations were students of Elizabeth Ross, Katie Dede, and Amy Oswald.
