Best Buddies Invites Talk with Respect

The High School Best Buddies organization would like to share that today is the national Spread the Word to End the “R” Word day!
Best Buddies informs that this day is about spreading the awareness to end the use of the word “Retarded”.  This word can be very detrimental and hurtful to people with disabilities.  President Obama signed Rosa’s Law in 2010 changing the use of the word “mental retardation” to “intellectual disability”.

This word is still heard throughout the nation, community, school hallways, and playgrounds.  With your pledge to stand up for others in need, we can disintegrate the use of the “R” word to nothing.  The next time you hear someone use the word “Retarded” in a derogatory sense, be sure to say something…say anything!  Making the person aware that their choice of words can be cruel to some people and hopefully they will change their vocabulary in the future is just the first step.  Take the pledge online!

While this is only one day that we promote awareness for people with disabilities, we should also stand up for others who may be viewed as “different”.  OJRSD prides themselves on being sensitive to ALL students and their families, no matter what the family dynamics or abilities or difference a person may be going through.

French Creek Elementary Students performed a young performers' edition of The Wizard of Oz! this past weekend. French Creek has maintained an active parent group who orchestrate great experiences for young performers who, in turn, dazzle audiences. In this classic tale, a girl from Kansas dreams of a life "over the rainbow" only to learn there really is "no place like home", and certainly "no place like French Creek".

Author Josh Berk Visits MS

Thank you, Mr. Josh Berk, for sharing writing expertise.

Students talked about murder mystery detective icon, Sherlock Holmes.

Students generated ideas about traits of an interesting detective.

Josh Berk, author of teen novels, visited Owen J. Roberts Middle School on Friday, March 10. Mr. Berk addressed the entire 7th and 8th grades, and also engaged small groups of students in a Mystery writing workshop.
He broke down important elements in writing in the mystery genre. He reminded students that the first way to get good at writing in a certain genre is to READ extensively in that genre. He talked about plot, characters and using descriptive phrases. Students practiced writing character descriptions from photos he displayed. The students brainstormed and worked together to sketch out the beginning of a mystery novel. Below is the early etching of a group-authored teen murder mystery hatched out by an eager collection of seventh graders in a relatively short amount of time:

I was sitting in the hard chair Mr. Fiers makes everyone suffer in when they’re in big trouble. My aching butt, however, was the least of my concerns. I hadn’t slept in 72 hours. I felt like I was losing my mind. I couldn’t even tell what was real anymore and everything felt terrifying to me. I was afraid of long words, moths, the dark, music, fuzzy animals, and even time itself.
The second hand ticking on the wall clock sounded like a booming bass drum. I really wanted to get out of here. Mr. Fiers came into the room. Just me and him. Just me, him, and his fuzzy black beard which looked like a rat hugging his chin.
“Is there something you want to tell me, maggot?” he said. There was. There were a lot of things I wanted to tell him. But I was smart enough to keep my mouth shut.
“No sir,” I said.
“It’s Mr. NoSir to you, maggot,” he said. He was definitely getting angry. And who could blame him? I knew as well as he did that all the paper clips and shoelaces were disappearing from school. And, if the rumors were correct, that included Mr. Fiers’ personal prized paper clip. That could ruin anyone’s day…

As part of the 9th annual Go for the Greens celebration, all elementary students were able to try spinach smoothies...enjoy one yourself, the recipe is below! The program is funded by the Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation, is organized by the Owen J. Roberts Wellness Council, and is executed by Chartwells with the help of many volunteers.

Power Up Smoothie

1 medium ripe banana.
1 cup of fresh, canned, or frozen pineapple
2 large handfuls of fresh spinach (washed)
4-6 ice cubes, use less if frozen fruit is used
1 cup 100% orange juice

In a blender, combine banana, pineapple, spinach and ice cubes. Puree until smooth. (We made this smoothie sweeter by using orange juice, but to cut the sweetness you can use water.)
