A group of plant-hungry pupils approached Family and Consumer Science teacher Ms. Lindsay Hale to start a plant-based cooking club. Ms. Hale agreed to advise the club which was approved and has met twice. This week, they started cooking making fettucine alfredo (vegan variety) using two different recipes which they could compare.  Ms. Hale also made the students Vegan Cashew Cheese they could try.

Chartwells Director Mrs. Heather Bonner, a registered dietician, plans to meet with the students to discuss nutritional needs to a vegan or vegetarian diet. The Owen J. Roberts Wellness Council is supporting the club with funding used from the Pottstown Area Health and Wellness Foundation to buy healthful, whole ingredients for cooking labs. Through participation, students hope to be empowered with healthy behaviors, cooking confidence,  and dietary knowledge.

February 26 School Board Meeting Highlights

Ready to Read!

Owen J. Roberts will celebrate Read Across America tomorrow! All types of reading promotion activities have been going on in our schools this week and students are excited to drop everything and enjoy time to read tomorrow!

Dawn Galambos, Department Chair for the High School English/Language Arts Department, reminded staff at the high school to "Consider our OJR HIGH SCHOOL READ-IN as the most enjoyable but crucial “time out” you’ve ever been issued or assigned to your students.

She explained, "We’ve heard that so many people, both students and adults, have such difficulty finding the time to read that they simply put it off.  Many of us engage in a type of triage approach to complete our work, attending to the most pressing due date first and saving other items for later.  And reading, for many, seems to be the last item on our lists when it deserves so much more attention.  I won’t dull my message by providing statistics because you know them from your education classes.  But think of it:  we’re giving our students time to engender an appreciation for reading.  Even if you don’t teach language arts, reading ameliorates skills relative to subjects throughout the building like analytical thinking, writing, vocabulary expansion, knowledge, and memory.  Additionally, it reduces stress and aids in focus and concentration—and who couldn’t use more of this?"

We can't wait to read tomorrow! Check out some of the reading themed doors at East Vincent Elementary School below:

PA State Police to be Visible in PA Schools

$

Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) have notified school districts in the Commonwealth that we may expect an increased presence of troopers conducting drive-throughs in marked patrol vehicles. It is important to emphasize that this is NOT being done in response to any active or interpreted threat or information. Additionally, troopers will be more proactive with their walk-through tours of school facilities, greetings of students during arrival and departure, and participation in our Trooper School Lunch program. In these ways, we believe that PSP may be physically present without interrupting the learning process for your students.

It is worth repeating that this is NOT being done in response to any active or interpreted threat or information. The purpose is simply to provide a visible officer presence as a deterrent to potential criminal activity and to establish a level of reassurance for the communities that PSP have sworn to protect. It should also be noted that this applies to all school facilities within the primary jurisdiction of the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop J, as well as non-primary coverage areas. Owen J. Roberts families should know that both PSP and local police conduct various regular visits to our schools.

PSP will continue to work with communities and schools so that we may be more proactive in protecting our most precious resource, the children in our community.

Owen J. Roberts celebrated Read Across America in all seven schools today giving students a chance to "travel" to exotic lands and take on new adventures.

Mrs. Melissa Booth, President of Owen J. Roberts Board of School Directors, read a delightful book, Phillie Phanatic's Galapagos Islands Adventure by Tom Burgoyne, illustrated by Len Epstein and shared photos of a recent trip she took to the Galapagos Islands with East Coventry Elementary students.  Students were delighted to hear about all the exotic animals and to learn that the Phanatic connected to a village on one of the islands in a very special way!

Many students thought this tortoise looked familiar

You may notice that students carried their own special animals with them to hear the story

Congratulations to nearly 80 NHS Inductees

Service Is One Of The Four Pillars Supporting The National Honor Society. Through The Course Of The 2017-2018 School Year, The Current NHS Members Have Participated In Numerous Service Activities Initiated By The Owen J. Roberts Chapter Of NHS.

High School Tutoring Program:

Through the course of the school year, many of our current NHS members have given back to the school by volunteering as tutors to provide academic guidance and assistance to their peers. The National Honor Society of Owen J. Roberts has tutored students in subjects such as Chemistry, Algebra, Geometry, History, English, World Languages and peer editing of papers to mention a few.

Elementary School Tutoring Program:

Upon being dismissed from school at 2:10, many of our NHS members, instead of going home, have gone to one of the five elementary schools to work with the younger children with their reading, writing, arithmetic and other essential skills needed for future academic success.

Reading Across America – March 2nd

On Friday, March 2nd, National Honor Society students will fan out to our five elementary schools in order to participate in Reading Across America. NHS members will devote part of their day to read with and to our young students so as to share in the excitement of reading and Dr. Suess’s birthday with Reading Across America. (This activity had to be cancelled due to inclement weather.)

Independent Community Service Activities

In addition to the NHS initiatives, students have been giving back to their community with individual and independent community service through the course of the 2017-2018 school term. These activities range from participating in numerous school sponsored events such as the Wildcat Ambassador Program and the upcoming Minithon to helping kids in camps, working with senior citizens through churches, food pantries, working as volunteers at local hospitals, participating in benefit concerts for senior citizens to mention a few. Thank you to all those who have indeed given back to their community. You have made a difference!

Students Apply Simple Machines Knowledge

K'Nex® simple machine lab

Mrs. Neiffer’s physical science classes at the middle school have been studying simple machines. There are many ways that students applied their knowledge throughout the unit. They created Rube Goldberg machines to understand how devices may be linked together to produce more complex actions.

On Friday, March 02, 2018, students took part in a K’Nex® lab, where they were able to apply input/output theory to create simple machines. Rather than trying to understand how simple machines work in the abstract, the hands-on lesson helps students calculate mechanical advantage to assess the performance of their machines.
Solving the problem in Educreation

Showing the teacher their work
To warm up for the lab, students solved the problem, “If a wedge struck by a 525N hammer blow can split a log held together by 1400N of force, what is its mechanical advantage?” Since Mrs. Neiffer has an iPad class, students performed their solutions using the Educreations App, which allows their iPads to become interactive whiteboards. Mrs. Neiffer was able to take a look at the iPads to assess how many students were able to solve the problem.
Plickers card
Mrs. Neiffer went on with the lesson using Plickers.com, a powerfully simple tool that lets teachers collect real-time formative assessment data without the need for student devices. Students use Plickers cards which have an image with sides that represent a different answer choice. When the teacher asks a question, students hold up their Plickers cards with the answer positioned at the top. The teacher scans the room and in a matter of seconds knows exactly if the class understands the concept.
Mrs. Neiffer gets instant feedback

With exposed brick walls and gleaming wood floors the former industrial space is a work of art in its own right. The gallery features an array of art and local artists with exhibits changing throughout the year.

The high school competition reception was held last week. Owen J. Roberts High School students competed with 18 works of art. Rachael Vince and Jane Minor both won awards. Congratulations to Rachael Vince  for "Plastic", oil painting and Jane Minor for the fabric jacket "Bowie".
