Congratulations to Samuel Turley, an Owen J. Roberts High School rising Junior, who has earned a coveted spot on the highly competitive, 77-year legacy Philadelphia Youth Orchestra on bass trombone.

Philadelphia Youth Orchestra
Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, having been presented on tour in over twenty countries, is one of the most well-recognized youth orchestra programs in the nation. It provides the region’s most advanced classical instrumental music students with unparalleled training and performance opportunities with world renowned soloists under the direction of Maestro Louis Scaglione, one of the leading youth orchestra conductors in the country. In addition to the opportunity to showcase their talents through high-profile radio broadcasts on WRTI FM and live performances in Verizon Hall of The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, members learn character-building life skills and supplement their collegiate and conservatory applications, making them strong candidates for acceptance into the most prestigious universities and conservatories around the world.

Samuels's mother shared that five years ago, on one of the last days of school, Mr. Andrew Klick, Sam's music teacher sent Sam, a baritone player, home with a trombone and said, "have fun.""Our family is thankful for Mr Klick seeing something special in Sam and Mr. Hess and Mr. Mengel nurturing Sam's passion and drive."
Sam Turley the day 5 years ago that Mr Klick sent him home with a trombone for the summer so he could "try out something new".

Congratulations to East Coventry Elementary School and North Coventry Elementary School for being recognized by the Pennsylvania Positive Behavior Support (PAPBS) Network for meeting the criteria in the implementation of School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SW PBIS) with fidelity during the 2017-18 school year.

SW-PBIS refers to a systems change process for a school. The underlying theme is teaching behavioral expectations in the same manner as any core curriculum subject. The school will focus on three to five behavioral expectations that are positively stated and easy to remember. In other words, rather than telling students what not to do, the school focus is on the preferred behaviors.  (pbis.org)

Fishing for Summer Learning

The learning never stops at Owen J. Roberts! The district offers a variety of enrichment opportunities open to all students within the community from June 12 through August 9, 2018. From fishing, crafts, sports, and STEM to serious academics, there are plenty of exciting activities from which to choose.

Our fishing camps are among the most popular!

Last week, when a fishing instructor got caught behind an accident on the turnpike on his way to school, a few employees who know a thing or two about fishing helped to supervise the fishing campers and demonstrate knot-tying.

This past weekend Coventry Rugby Wildcats participated in the Elizabethtown Rugby 7's tournament.  The Youth/U13, Junior/U15 and High School teams all played.

The Coventry Rugby High School team won first place beating out Elizabethtown, Carlisle, Hempfield and Berks County teams.  It was a great win for a young high school team now preparing for the fall Rugby 7's series in September and October.

Above is a photo of the players with their "winner's vests". The players represent the Owen J. Roberts community up-holding the club ideals of "Teamwork - Determination - Respect".

In Arts & Crafts camp this week, students learned about the Elephant Festival that takes place in the city of Jaipur, India each year. For the festival, the elephants are draped with jewelry and given majestic multi-color makeovers before doing a procession through the streets. Students are able to dream about what their animal many look like if presented to royalty and they have the opportunity to create their own marvelously decorated elephants.

Two Wildcat Wrestlers just became Freestyle All-Americans. Antonio Petrucelli wrestled cadet 145 and placed 4th in the country going 7-2 over the weekend.  Daniel Mancini wrestled in arguably the toughest weight class in the tournament Junior 152 and placed 7th in the country going 6-2 over the weekend. Dan had a big win over Ian Wilcox from Utah in the round of 16 who is the second rank wrestler in the country at that weight class.  Antonio and Dan are the only two (2) All Americans from District 1 this year and are the first All American's from Owen J Roberts since Aaron Brown took second in the country in 1998.

Congratulations to two Owen J. Roberts administrators who will be taking new appointments within the District for the 2018-2019 school year.
Dr. Richard Marchini will take the helm as Director of Pupil Services. Dr. Marchini was the principal at Owen J. Roberts High School for the past 11 years. He enjoyed working with high school staff and the students each day. He was very involved in giving students a voice in running the school through student government. He embraces a new position assisting students across the district, K-12. A transition plan is being developed for the hire of a new high school principal and families will be notified with details very soon. Dr. Marchini will continue to work with the high school assistant principals and entire team to be ready to welcome students in the fall. Please join us in wishing Dr. Marchini great success in his new role.
Mr. Corbin Stoltzfus was promoted to principal of Owen J. Roberts Middle School. He will replace Mr. Sean Burns, who has taken a position with another school district. Mr. Stoltzfus has a long history with Owen J. Roberts School District and has been involved in youth sports in the area for many years. He has a special connection with middle-level students and is excited to serve students in a new role. The district has opened a search for a new Assistant Middle School Principal. In the interim, curriculum supervisors will support Mr. Stoltzfus. Owen J. Roberts High School was awarded Outstanding Best Buddies Chapter for the 2017-2018 school year. Best Buddies enhances the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment. Best Buddies is the first unified, international program that pairs individuals with intellectual disabilities and college or high school students in one-to-one mutually enriching relationships.

Best Buddies is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization incorporated in 1989. Owen J. Roberts High School is fortunate to be one of the over 1,200 Best Buddies chapters
in Colleges and High Schools throughout all 50 states and 22 countries. While participants find part of life’s fulfillment in friendship, the Best Buddies pairs are also examples to their communities of acceptance and support for people with intellectual disabilities. Best Buddies events are funded with the help of chapter fundraisers, sale of Best Buddies merchandise, community support, special events, private and corporate donations and Best Buddies grants. Each member of the buddy pair pays for him or herself in one-to-one activities.

The award was presented to rising Owen J. Roberts High School senior, Isabelle Gunson, at the Best Buddies Leadership Conference at Indiana University last week.Over 2200 students attended the conference from all around the globe.

According to the conference website, "Over the past 29 years, the Best Buddies Leadership Conference (BBLC) has inspired thousands of leaders to be Best Buddies advocates and to bring about social change in their communities. BBLC is a once in a lifetime experience that unites Best Buddies leaders, volunteers, and community advocates from around the globe. Conference attendees gain knowledge in order to effectively take action both individually and as part of a group for a common cause while discovering the importance of their actions, responsibilities, and energy."

Global Food Exploration Camp
A variety of summer experiences and courses are offered in the summer at Owen J. Roberts. This summer, 502 students took advantage of the summer opportunities which included 24 enrichment activities and 7 accelerated courses. The most popular camps include fishing, baking, and arts & crafts. Many students take advantage of mathematics and science acceleration courses. There are many ways for high school students to take coursework that allows more flexibility in the regular semesters.

This week, students participated in a culinary exploration of foods from around the world in the Global Exploration Food Camp taught by Family and Consumer Science teacher Ms. Lindsay Hale. European, Asian and Latin American dishes and spices were explored. This morning, students were creating breakfast burritos.

Colette Dellaquila
Enjoy the mural above by senior AP Studio Art student and recent Owen J. Roberts graduate, Colette Dellaquila. Collette was one of eight AP students who tackled the final mural project this year. Colette, along with the other AP artists, worked long hours creating a meaningful piece. When many of their peers have finished final exams and projects, these artists are still working and squeeze as much time into their paintings to produce a finished product for which they can be proud. Their tenacity is impressive for such young workers.
Murals are about the message first and the visual aspects second, whether the message is written or implied. According to instructor Tracey Schiavello, “It is beautiful to see the critical thinking and problem solving throughout the process." Students focus on color theory, maintaining hue, mixing enough paint to finish the job,  making sure the background doesn't overpower the message and asking if the viewer be able to "get" the intended message.

College Application Boot Camp was held this week at Owen J. Roberts High School with nearly 50 students attending. Boot Camp is is an excellent enrichment program for rising seniors to get a jump start and extra confidence on the college application process. The course helps students navigate the complex college admissions process from creating a school list by using a software tool, Naviance, to producing college application essays. The Naviance technology is a comprehensive tool that helps students align their strengths and interests with post secondary goals. Students are able to understand college possibilities, explore college admission statistics, match best-fit colleges and even identify possible college majors.

Guidance Counselors, Mr. Greg Gilbert and Ms. Jen Arnst, are the instructors for the course. Assisting students in writing stand-out admissions essays are Mrs. Dawn Galambos, Mrs. Beth Seiler and Mrs. Amber Benson-Chubb from the High School English Department.

Today, Owen J. Roberts secondary teachers took part in an evidence-informed, two-hour workshop designed to teach adults how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse.

The program is different than mandated reporter training. It offers much more detailed insight into how to end child sexual abuse and how adults, educators in particular, can effect real change to accomplish that.

The program is part of the Safe and Healthy Communities Initiative grant in Chester County. It is the first comprehensive initiative in our county created to end child sexual abuse. Over the next three years facilitators from the Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County will present workshops to children and adults in the community.
