Owen J. Roberts High School students understand that a safe and stable blood supply is predicated by a strong and willing community. Today, Miller-Keystone Blood Center was at the high school for a semi-annual blood drive. More than 100 students and many staff signed up to give blood. In addition to donors, more than 30 student Key Club volunteers helped man the drive assisting and supporting peers.

According to MKBC, “Blood transfusions save more than 4 million Americans each year. From cancer patients to accident victims, premature babies and more, the generosity of blood donors contributes to saving lives right here in our community. Miller-Keystone Blood Center is the only blood supplier to 22 hospitals in our region.”

NJROTC is again setting up troop units to receive shipments of Halloween candy. NJROTC collects the leftover candy from the REA Trick or Treat Night. NJROTC boxes the candy and will have the cadets put notes and cards in the boxes for the service members.  East Vincent Elementary School has collected spare candy for troops for a couple of years (last year collecting 22 pounds). They appeal to families to send in any extra candy they won't be using. They will be working with NJROTC to get the candy placed out to troops. Their students will also work on writing notes to troops. Cadets will package and ship the candy out to various locations. When received, the troops will see that it is a joined effort with East Coventry Elementary students and the high school NJROTC cadets.

Fall Play, Telling Wilde Tales Nov.16-17

The cast and crew of the Fall Play cordially invites you to attend our performance of Telling Wilde Tales:  An Adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s Fairy Talesby Jules Tasca on Friday, November 16 or Saturday, November 17, 2018 in the high school auditorium at 7:00 p.m. both evenings.  Tickets are just $5.00 and can be purchased from any cast member or at the door.

In “The Birthday of the Infanta,” a bratty Spanish princess (Kat Bobo) is bored by the entertainment the advisor Don Pedro (Michael Maher) provides every year on her birthday until she is gifted with Carlos (Wyeth Casperite), a deformed boy from the woods who has never seen his own image.  This “monster” dances for her and delights her, but she ultimately breaks his heart.  In addition to those students mentioned above, the following actors are featured:  Aaron Phillips, Jeremiah Pike, Violet Minor, Victoria Kane, RJ Duske, Anna Subick, Carlee Bonanno, and Ethan Pierce.

In “The Star Child,” an exceptional boy (Theo Damiani) is taken in by a lowly woodcutter (Asa Burkholder) and his family when he is found in the woods on a cold night as an infant.  Convinced he is better than everyone else, he offends and wounds all with whom he comes into contact—man and animals alike.  After so much terrible behavior, he is cursed and grows so physically ugly that he is shunned.  It’s not until he gives selflessly to those who need his help that his appearance is restored.  The following actors are featured:  Gianna Daiuto, Jeremiah Pike, Morgan Flaim, Faith Turnbull, Manus Weber, Ana Fokin, Alina Orzechowski, Ronniesha Tirumalasetty, Taylor Belcher, Ethan Pierce, Max McCullagh, RJ Duske, Victoria Kane, Michael Maher, Anna Subick, Carlee Bonanno.
In “The Happy Prince,” the statue of a prince (Aaron Phillips) is beside itself because he sees suffering in the town.  He befriends a swallow (Emily Wunder) that comes to rest on his pedestal who—under his direction—removes the valuable gemstones and gold from him and distributes all of these riches to the needy in the village.  Unfortunately, the little swallow has stayed so long that she perishes. Those in charge congratulate themselves for the town’s prosperity and behave as mankind often does, but God Himself recognizes the sacrifices made by the Prince and the Swallow and rewards them justly.  The following actors are featured:  Ronniesha Tirumalasetty, Morgan Flaim, Blair Frederick, Manus Weber, Asa Burkholder, Max McCullagh, Theo Damiani, RJ Duske, Jeremiah Pike, Victoria Kane, Wyeth Casperite, Gianna Daiuto, along with faculty members Jessica Brilla, Shonnah Jones, Jeremy Fox, and Jon Yoder.

In “The Nightingale and the Rose,” a nightingale (Abbey Hannis) is willing to give up her life when the rose bush (Annie Arditi) tells her the only way to allow love to grow between a boy (Max McCullagh) and a girl (Isabella Darlington) is through her sacrifice.  Also featured is Michael Maher as the lizard.

In “The Devoted Friend,” Little Hans (RJ Duske) is a completely giving friend, whereas Big Hugh (Ethan Pierce), is not.  Hugh manipulates and takes advantage of his friend so that he gets everything he desires for his own family.  It’s not until the end of the tale when Hugh realizes what happens when one pushes his friends too far.  Featured along with the actors above are Carlee Bonanno as Hugh’s wife, Theo Damiani as his son, and Georgia Hand as his daughter.

In “The Fisherman and His Soul,” a young fisherman (Wyeth Casperite) falls in love with a mermaid (Annie Arditi), but in order to remain with her forever, he must rid himself of his Soul (Sydney Smith).  Despite being warned about the severity of such an action, he continues with his desires and must pay a steep price.  Featured actors are Kat Bobo, Alina Orzechowski, Sarah Chintala, Carlee Bonanno, Faith Turnbull, Asa Burkholder, with Toni Abson as the Witch, and Manus Weber as the Priest.

“The Young King,” (Max McCullough) has a terrible nightmare, and he sees what it takes to keep him clothed in jewels and riches:  lowly workers perish in their labors.  When the king wakes, he commands that all of the finery he once wore be given to the poor, and he teaches everyone in his kingdom what his dreams have taught him.  Also featured are Isabella Darlington, Kat Bobo, Anna Subick, Michael Maher, Abbey Hannis, Toni Abson, Morgan Flaim, Ana Fokin, Violet Minor, Emily Wunder, and RJ Duske.

The show is directed by Dawn Galambos, assisted by Student Directors Christina Agresta and Katherine Thorpe. The show is produced by special arrangement with Samuel French.

The annual Veterans Day ceremony organized by Mr. David Schwenk, was held on November 9 at the high school. Dr. Susan Lloyd welcomed guests, proudly noting that all seven Owen J. Roberts School District schools pause on this day to pay special appreciation to veterans with the goal that each of us choose to honor veterans every single day. State Representative Tim Hennessey paid tribute to the veterans, and Mr. Philip Innamorato, field representative delivered a statement from Senator Pat Toomey.  Mr. William Richardson, High School Supervisor; Ahmed Alveed, Student Government President; Cadet/Lt. Commander Eric Friedeman, NJROTC Senior Officer; and Master Gunnery Seargeant Andrew Worley, Head of Naval Junior ROTC all added thoughts.

Cake cutting ceremony with two honored WWII Veterans

Among the veterans in attendance were WWII veterans, who received special recognition. As a tradition, the oldest veteran and youngest cadet cut the cake after lunch. Two WWII veterans in attendance had birthdays close enough to share the honor of being the oldest, Mr. William Bull, 96, part of the WWII Big Red One, First Infantry and Mr. Frank Harrath, 96, part of the WWII 83rdInfantry. The event included musical performances, speeches, and a luncheon. The luncheon provided an opportunity for students and veterans to interact with one another and for students to express their gratitude and serve veterans.

Owen J. Roberts schools honor veterans in various ways. This year, French Creek Elementary School students and staff welcomed a father, Mr. Troy Beane, who had surprised his family with an unexpected return from Kuwait that morning!
Mr. Troy Beane welcomed home!

French Creek Elementary School hosted a Veteran’s Day Appreciation Breakfast on Friday, November 9th.  Honored guests enjoyed a PTA sponsored breakfast prior to attending a school-wide assembly where each veteran was recognized for his or her service to our country.  Third and sixth grade students entertained guests with patriotic songs.
What a happy day! We thank Mr. Beane and his family for sharing this day with French Creek
The highlight of the assembly was when 1st grade father, Troy Beane was introduced.  Mr. Beane, an active duty serviceman in the United States Army, surprised his family with an unexpected return from Kuwait the morning before the celebration.  It was a heartfelt moment when the entire auditorium rose to honor Mr. Beane with a standing ovation.  We continue to thank all of our veterans and active duty men and women for their service to protect our freedom.

West Vincent Elementary School honored Veteran’s on November 9th, 2018!  The veterans were provided with a breakfast while a social/emotional speaker presented on the theme of service.  The breakfast lead to an all school assembly. The orchestra and chorus performed, students composed and presented writing pieces thanking veterans, and the assembly ended with each veteran receiving an award and thoughtful notes from students sharing their appreciation for their service.

East Coventry Elementary School hosted a breakfast for the local veterans on Friday, November 9th. The breakfast include a special presentation created by the children of East Coventry.  Our Owen J Roberts NJROTC led the group in the raising of the American Flag.  Finally, many of the veterans visited the classrooms sharing their stories and experiences.

At North Coventry Elementary School, students invited their own loved ones to take part in the Veteran’s Day ceremonial activities. They started as one community for breakfast with Veterans.  After breakfast everyone was invited outside for the ROTC presentation of the colors, followed by laying the North Coventry Ceremonial Wreath.  They concluded the morning with a Veterans Day Assembly with performances from the NC band students, choral group, Lions Cubs, and first grade students.

The Field Hockey team finished with an overall record of 22-3 this season, as well as 13-2 in the PAC league. The team battled back from two regular season overtime losses against rival Perk Valley to eventually beat them in the PAC Championship game. The team then earned the 4th seed in the District 1 tournament and made it to the championship game where they again faced Perk Valley. The team was able to beat PV again to become District 1 champions! With their wins in the District 1 tournament, the team qualified for the PIAA State Tournament, but lost in the first round against Hershey HS to end their season.

The girls soccer team went undefeated with a record of 19-0-2. They were undefeated PAC Champions scoring 71 goals and only giving up two. Twelve different players scored goals. The two goals given up is a new PA state record for a season. The teams "goals against" average for the season was also a new PA record. The team had 19 shut outs which puts them in the top ten for shut outs in a season for PA! Nine seniors will move on to play in college. They are only 1 of 7 teams to have an undefeated regular season in the history of PA girls soccer.

East Coventry Elementary School has a fun annual campaign called Burning Off the Bird to inspire leading a healthy lifestyle. The week after Thanksgiving, the entire student body is intentional in getting in extra steps. Today, Principal Oswald visited all classrooms to introduce the walking challenge. Mrs. Jordan came along to promote a focus on healthy eating as well!

Mrs. Mitchell marked a new Burn off the Bird walking path course in the hallways of the brand new building.

Each homeroom class will take one round trip walk in the hallway each day and Mrs. Mitchell will add a one round trip loop during her PE class with each class.  This will total one mile for the week.

Principal Oswald (aka Turkey) & Mrs. Jordan distributed mile marker cut out sneakers to students this morning.  The sparkly turkey got the full attention of students (and teachers)!

The annual Best Buddies 5K/Fun Run was held on Saturday, December 1, at the central campus of Owen J. Roberts. About 400 runners of all ages participated.
Run 101 after school running clubs were held at each of the five Owen J. Roberts Elementary Schools. Students in grades 4-6 have been enjoying fun running games and becoming conditioned to be able to run 3.1 miles. The run is sponsored by Best Buddies and also benefits the Owen J. Roberts Education Foundation. The event, which draws runners of all ages, is a fun way for the community to come together and pursue a healthy activity for good causes.

Sunshine was very much enjoyed, but runners still needed mittens, leg warmers, and hats and the terrific warm up at the conclusion of the race--a sweet treat of hot chocolate! The majority of the course is on the campus.  Many thanks to all volunteers including the amazing Jojo Lorman, our DJ for playing the best popular music out there! There was face-painting, dancing, holiday-inspired games for the kids, and prizes!

The mission of Best Buddies is to enhance the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment.  Owen J. Roberts High School is fortunate to be one of the over 1,200 Best Buddies chapters in Colleges and High Schools throughout all 50 states and 22 countries.  While participants find part of life’s fulfillment in friendship, the Best Buddies pairs are also examples to their communities of acceptance and support for people with intellectual disabilities.
Best Buddies work hard behind the scenes to set up and run the 5K. Proceeds benefit Best Buddies and the Owen J. Roberts Education Foundation, so participation in the run funnels right back into schools to benefit all Owen J. Roberts students.
