Mr. Skip Winter enjoyed telling Middle School students that he played Wildcat basketball with Mr. Corbin Stoltzfus during his middle and high school career at Owen J. Roberts. He also told students, "I didn't realize how important Language Arts was when I was your age." He went on to encourage students to apply themselves to be strong communicators.

Mr. Winter reported that his comic book series, Unit 5, is the only cause-related comic book in the world. He continually gives back to first responders.

The Unit 5 website describes the comic series background, "September 11th 2001 was an ominous day in U.S history. However, it became the turning point in the fight against global terror. Founded by the United States Government and born out of the personal tragedies of 5 extraordinary individuals. Each with deep ties to ground zero, Unit 5 was born."

Mr. Winter met with the entire 7th and 8th grades in the morning, then conducted smaller, breakout groups later in the day.

Students were especially eager to hear where Mr. Winter had gone to elementary school. He attended both East Vincent and East Coventry Elementary Schools. He graduated from Owen J. Roberts High School in 1989.

Mia Flavin with her parents

Mia Flavin, grade 9, was selected for the Girls in Medicine Program sponsored by The Clinic in Phoenixville. Mia recently accepted the award on behalf of the Clinic and is excited about the opportunity.

According to the clinic's website:

The Girls in Medicine Program is a one-year enrichment program for highly motivated and talented high school girls interested in pre-medicine and healthcare careers.
During the summer healthcare intensive, participants attend medical lectures, complete a CPR/First Aid Certification Course, and experience clinical rotations at Phoenixville Hospital and Paoli Hospital. The clinical curriculum focuses on cardiology, emergency medicine, gynecology, pediatric, and physical therapy – just to name a few. The leadership curriculum focuses on confidence and self-esteem. Upon completion of the summer intensive, participants develop individual health projects or research projects in their school or community environment with the guidance of their assigned mentor. Participants continue to explore healthcare careers by attending monthly online medical lectures and representing The Clinic at community events. For participants interested in expanding their hands on experience, they may apply for volunteer opportunities working at Phoenixville Hospital during after-school and weekend hours in areas such as Pediatrics, Emergency Room, and other administrative departments at the hospital. At the end of the year, participants will present their findings and experience to a panel of medical and public health professionals.

The Middle School Leos set a $1,000 Pennies for Patients goal this year. The group actually raised $1,415! Since 1994, pennies and other spare change have added up to millions to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

The Leos group also recently did a building-wide clean-up and they will be going to In Ian's Boots, which provides shoes and boots to those in need.

Hello summer! The Owen J. Roberts School District is excited to announce a variety of enrichment opportunities open to all students within the community from June 14 through August 11.  From fishing, crafts, sports, and STEM to serious academics, there are plenty of exciting activities from which to choose.
Registration is open and will run through Thursday, May 26, 2016, or until sessions are full.  Please check the published brochure on our website weekly to catch any updates with new offerings or perhaps to review the closed sessions as they fill up (i.e. fishing).

Our summer opportunities are self-supporting and can only be offered with sufficient enrollment. There are three ways to register for programs including an exciting new online registration feature eFunds for Schools.  If you choose to use the online payment option, you still need to complete the registration form.

Our summer programs offer students of all ages a place to come together to play, learn, and grow.  For more information e-mail Missy Walton or Heidi Lehmann at mwalton@ojrsd.com or hlehmann@ojrsd.com, or call 610-469-5196.

Students Hit High Notes and Head to State Festival

Congratulations to Conrad Sager, PMEA Region 6 representative, who placed first, Bass 1 in the state competition. Ms. Sheila McIntyre mentioned that the music the students needed to learn for the competition was among the most challenging she had ever seen. Conrad will be representing Owen J. Roberts High School at the prestigious PMEA All-State Choir in Hershey.

We would also like to recognize Daniel DiMarino, who will be performing in the All-State Orchestra. Daniel technically scored 6th place in choir competition (which would have secured his position in the All-State Choir). Daniel has already accepted a placement in the All-State Orchestra, so is ineligible to participate in All-State Choir. A student may not participate in more than one ensemble, but we recognize him for his achievement in both musical arenas.

East Coventry students rally for school mate Dylan Spriggs, who is fighting a rare disease

A group of sixth grade students at East Coventry Elementary call themselves Origami Inc. They have been using their skills and imagination to raise funds for a school mate--a kindergarten student diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Among their many fundraising efforts, the students made origami frogs which symbolize "a leap of faith" and have been selling them at the student store for the past few weeks.

Dylan Spriggs, a 5-year-old student at East Coventry Elementary, was diagnosed on Dec. 30, 2015 with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an inoperable brain tumor. Students are very intent on fighting the fight alongside of their friend.
Origami frogs symbolize a leap of faith

Tonight at a major Dylan's Dino Bingo event, the students will be selling Hope Bags for $.50. Below is the Hope Bag description the students of Origami Inc wrote….

This is a “Hope Bag”. Each item represents a symbol of hope. The origami frog symbolizes a “leap of faith” and with each leap is strength. The Star Wars sticker symbolizes “reaching for the stars….the impossible” and always “sticking” to positive goals in life. The string bracelet symbolizes “a circle of hope” that can never be broken. The candy symbolizes that “life is sweet” when we work together as a team!! Thank you for supporting Team Dylan-Origami Inc.

Students loved Balsamic Roasted Brussel Sprouts

West Vincent students were in the Brussel Sprout spirit
East Vincent 6th grade students encouraged younger brussel tasters

Principal McKillip greeted students as the school buses unloaded
Chef Rick and volunteers were amazed how students at North Coventry loved brussel sprouts
Owen J. Roberts elementary students learned to accept a vegetable who is often left out--left on the sidelines. Don't Bully the Brussel was the theme to Chef Visits at each of the Owen J. Roberts Elementary Schools this week. Chef Rick Wray pre-roasted brussel sprouts and cooked them with a splash of Balsamic Vinegar during lunches. One may be surprised to learn that, depending on the lunch, there was an 80-90% participation rate in the tasting. Many students begged for seconds. And thirds. At one lunch table of 20 students, 17 asked for seconds. 12 said it was the first time they had tried brussel sprouts; 17 said they would eat again. (And one student confessed that Chef Rick made them better than his mom.)
Go for the Greens is an annual celebration of good food and great fun encouraging kids to eat green plant based foods. In its 8th year, students have learned to love broccoli, peas, lettuce, kiwi, kale and event the once-bullied brussel sprout!

Leo's Help Ian's Boots

For the second year in a row the Middle School Leo Club joined the Coventry Lions Club in a joint project  at In Ian’s Boots.

Leo advisor Kira Rumpp (top, second from right) had several members of her club join half a dozen of Lions in a project at the newly relocated In Ian's Boots' Shoe Box.

Last month High School Leos helped move the contents from the old location to the new space, a small warehouse located in North Coventry on rt. 100.

The job the Leos and Lions had before them was to clean the warehouse shelving units and reorganize the existing shoes, boots and sneakers. This turned into quite a task as the warehouse is still being set up and other donations are waiting to be cleaned, separated and catalogued.

Before beginning the service of organizing the relocated footwear, the Leos used a large handcart (see top picture) to bring in the shoe supplies they had brought with them from their "New and Slightly Used Shoe Drive" they held prior to the service date. These shoes find new owners from all parts of the world. Read about In Ian’s Boots HERE.
